A Travellerspoint blog

I feel an introduction is needed…

My Tashirat Experience

So here is the scoop. I am now living in Tepoztlan, Mexico. I am living on an ashram (Tashirat - http://www.tashirat.com) with 11 staff/provisional members, 31 children (28 which are adopted), a handful of volunteers, three dogs, and an occasional horse (and/or cow). It’s in the mountains 1-2 hours outside of Mexico City and sits on a lush and rolling landscape. It is communal living at its best.

I am volunteering here for a year, putting myself and my talents to the test. I took a year for myself, traveling the world, now I want to take a year and give back. I am here to help, to learn, to teach and to put smiles on the faces of kids that have battled life’s darkest corners.

There is a simplistic beauty that resonates from this place. I like that.

This is also the place where my ex-girlfriend Marisa calls home. That in itself has offered its challenges, but from the night of my arrival, we have been positively transitioning into our new co-working roles as friends. I have heard, read, seen and felt the effects of Tashirat for the past 18 months of my life, and now, it’s time to live it, firsthand - for myself.

So let the helping, learning, teaching and smile-putting experience begin. This should be interesting… buckle up.
